Lets face it, cost is a concern for most people no matter what you’re purchasing. Why should a funeral be any different? With the average price of a traditional funeral being ten thousand dollars, affordable alternatives to the traditional funeral have become very popular.
Every year more families choose cremation. Being much more affordable and environmentally friendly than burial it’s not surprising that in 2011, 70% of families that make funeral arrangements will choose cremation.
Every funeral home offers a basic cremation, however, because of high overhead, many funeral homes charge astronomical prices for this service. During this difficult time, it is extremely difficult to “shop” for a fair price so we’ve done the work for you. These prices are been taken from the most recent price lists provided to us by the actual funeral establishment listed.
Cremation vs. Burial
With the increasing rate of cremation in Canada, it is important to understand why this trend is growing. With the only other option being burial, the differences are easily understood if you have all the facts.
Environmentally speaking, cremation is a much greener choice than burial. For example, every year across North America, over 23 000 cemeteries bury over 900 000 gallons of embalming fluid containing a host of hazardous chemicals that seep into our water table. Cremation on the other hand typically offers no pollution from the embalming procedure because in most cases embalming does not take place before cremation. Avoiding the embalming procedure also saves families from the thought of an extremely invasive procedure. Crematoriums are also heavily regulated from the ministry of environment. In fact, the traditional chimney will no longer be present in new crematoriums. New crematoriums will be so efficient and so clean the there will be no emissions to the atmosphere at all.
Not only is the cremation itself much less expensive than burial, but the services associated with cremation are also more economical and have become favored by families in Toronto. Most families that wish to hold services are finding more value in memorial services with an urn or picture as a focal point instead of the traditional and often disturbing, open casket.
There are service providers that offer families affordable options but they are few and far between. However, the latest trend is holding memorial services without the presence of a funeral home. There is no reason why, after the cremation is complete, families can’t hold service in a church or hall. Once the venue is booked and family and friends are notified, all that’s left to do is arrive. It’s very easy to book a minister or funeral celebrant or even have a few friends or family members deliver eulogies or share memories.
